A Family Summer Photoshoot in Cape Town: My R2,500 Beach Special

Summer on this side of the mountain has a light all its own. The late afternoon sun drops behind the sea at Noordhoek, the long beach turns soft gold, and everyone seems a little more relaxed. It's my favourite time of year to be behind the camera, so this summer I'm offering a simple, easy-to-book session: 45 minutes of photography for R2,500, anywhere within 20 km of my base at Chapman's Peak and Noordhoek.

You don't need a big occasion. It might be the whole family together before the holidays, grandparents visiting from upcountry, cousins who only see each other once a year, or just because the kids are growing up too fast. I keep things relaxed and natural, the kind of photos that look like your best summer day, not a stiff studio portrait.

What the Family Summer Special includes

• A 45 -minute photo session at a location of your choice within about 20 km of Noordhoek
• 20 edited images, delivered in an online gallery within 7 working days
• Gentle guidance on posing, but mostly I let you be yourselves

Who this session is for

Families

A beach family photoshoot is one of my favourite ways to spend a summer evening. Little ones running at the water's edge, piggybacks, sandy toes, grandparents in the middle of it all. 45 minutes is a good length for children too: long enough to warm up, short enough that nobody melts down. Grandparents and extended family

Summer is often the one time of year when everyone is in the same place. Three generations on the sand, grandparents with the grandchildren, siblings and their own families together: these are the photos people treasure most. I'll make sure we get a few of the whole group, then smaller groupings so every family has its own.

Natural family moments

Some of my favourite family images happen when nothing is staged: the kids building a sandcastle, a walk with the dog, a picnic in your own garden. Summer locations within 20 km of Noordhoek

Every one of these is a short drive from my base, so they're all included in the Family Summer Special:

• Noordhoek Beach: wide, open sand with the mountains behind you. Perfect for golden hour and for families who need space to run.
• Chapman's Peak: dramatic cliffs and ocean views, lovely for a family portrait with a view. (Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road.)
• Kalk Bay streets with their colours and quirky feel.
• Kommetjie: the lighthouse, Long Beach and rocky coves with a wild, windswept feel.
• Hout Bay: the beach and harbour, with the Sentinel watching over everything.
• Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay: warm False Bay water, colourful beach huts and harbour charm.
• Scarborough and Misty Cliffs: quiet, rugged and beautifully empty on a weekday evening
• Simonstown's harbour and walkways
• Your own garden or home: in the Noordhoek Valley, Sun Valley, Sunnydale or nearby. Sometimes the best location is where life actually happens.

When to book: summer light and wind

In a Cape Town summer the sun sets late, close to 8pm in December and January, so a golden-hour session works well after work or after the beach. Early mornings are beautiful too, and they're often calmer before the south-easter picks up. I keep an eye on the forecast and if the wind is howling we'll move to a more sheltered spot or reschedule.

How far will you travel for the R2,500 price?

The Family Summer Special covers locations within about 20 km of my base at Chapman's Peak and Noordhoek, which includes Noordhoek, Kommetjie, Hout Bay, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, Scarborough and the surrounding valley. A small travel fee may apply beyond 20 km. Just ask and I'll let you know before you book.

Can grandparents or extended family join?

Yes. The session is for your family, however you define it: parents and kids, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Let me know roughly how many people are coming so I can plan the groupings and the spot.

What should we wear?

Soft, natural colours work beautifully on the beach: whites, creams, sand, sage, dusty blue and denim. Coordinate rather than match, avoid big logos and neon, and choose something you can move in. Bare feet are very welcome on the sand. Bring a light layer, as evenings near the sea can turn cool. I will send you a comprehensive clothing guide.

What's the best time of day for a summer photoshoot?

The hour or so before sunset gives the warmest, most flattering light. Early morning is a lovely alternative, often with less wind and quieter beaches. Midday sun is harsh, so I'd usually avoid it unless we're working in shade.
