Some of the photos people treasure most aren’t the perfect, everyone-look-at-the-camera ones. They’re the in-between moments: a laugh over morning coffee, a walk on the beach, a hand resting on a shoulder. That’s what lifestyle photography is about, and it’s what we love most.
As a lifestyle photographer in Cape Town, we’re often asked what “natural” photography actually means and whether it’s right for people who feel awkward on camera (it is, especially for them). Here’s what to expect, where we can shoot around Cape Town, and how we help you relax so your photos feel like real life, not a performance.
Lifestyle photography, explained
Lifestyle photography captures you doing what you actually do: cooking, walking, playing, working or simply being together. Instead of working through a list of poses, we create a relaxed situation and photograph what unfolds. The result is a set of images that tells a story, rather than a row of near-identical portraits.
What “natural” means to us
When people search for a natural photographer in Cape Town, they’re usually looking for photos that don’t feel staged. For us, natural means three things:
- Natural light. Soft daylight from a window at home, or open shade and golden hour outdoors.
- Natural moments. Real expressions and real connection instead of stiff, held smiles.
- Natural you. Your own clothes, your own space and your own personality, with no heavy retouching to turn you into someone else.
We do give gentle guidance, like where to stand or which way to face the light, but always to help you feel at ease, never to make you perform.
Lifestyle vs traditional posed portraits
Traditional portraits are carefully posed and usually look straight at the camera. They’re perfect when you need a formal image. Lifestyle sessions are looser: we move, we chat, we let things happen, and we capture both the big smiles and the quiet glances. Many clients enjoy a mix, with a few classic portraits plus a whole gallery of candid moments.

At home or on location in Cape Town
At home
Home is wonderfully personal. Think breakfast in the kitchen, reading on the couch, a pillow fight on the bed or the dog stealing the spotlight. You’re at your most comfortable on your own turf, and your home quietly tells your story. Don’t worry about it being “photo-ready”: we only need one or two well-lit corners.
Out and about
Cape Town gives us endless natural settings: a barefoot walk on Noordhoek Beach, a picnic under the trees in Tokai Forest, coffee in your favourite neighbourhood café, or sunset over the city from Signal Hill. Choose somewhere that means something to you. For more ideas, see our guide to the best family photo locations in Cape Town.
How we help you relax
Most people feel a little awkward for the first five minutes, and that’s completely normal. Here’s how we get past it together:
- We start with a chat, not a lens in your face.
- We give you something to do: walk, talk, make tea, tell each other a story. Movement beats posing every time.
- We use prompts, not poses. “Whisper something silly to each other” gets a far better laugh than “smile”.
- We keep it light. Laughter is our favourite prop.
Before long, the camera fades into the background, and that’s exactly when the best photos happen.
Working with Cape Town’s natural light
Our light is beautiful but changes quickly. Early morning and the hour before sunset bring soft, warm tones, and a bright overcast day is wonderfully gentle. Midday sun is harsh, so if we shoot then we look for open shade under trees or beside buildings. Indoors, we turn off overhead lights and work with windows. And because Cape Town’s wind can be strong, especially in summer, we always keep a sheltered backup spot in mind.
What to wear for a lifestyle shoot
- Wear clothes you love and feel like yourself in, slightly elevated.
- Choose soft textures (knits, linen, cotton) and colours that complement your home or location.
- Avoid large logos and very busy prints.
- For couples and families, coordinate rather than match.
- Bring a layer: Cape Town evenings cool down quickly.

Questions
What’s the difference between lifestyle and portrait photography?
Portraits are posed and usually look at the camera. Lifestyle photos capture real activity and interaction, with gentle guidance rather than set poses. Many sessions include a little of both.
I’m awkward in front of the camera. Will this work for me?
Yes, lifestyle photography is ideal for camera-shy people, because you’re doing something rather than holding a pose.
Does my home need to be tidy or stylish?
Not at all. We only need a couple of spots with good window light, and a lived-in home often makes the warmest photos.
Can lifestyle photos be used for my business?
Absolutely. Natural, candid images work beautifully on websites and social media.
Where in Cape Town can we shoot?
At your home, or at a beach, forest, park or neighbourhood that means something to you.
