Best Family Photo Locations in Cape Town: Beaches, Forests and Gardens

Spoilt for choice in the winelands

“Where should we have our photos taken?” It’s one of the first questions families ask us, whether they’ve lived here all their lives or are visiting for a few weeks over the holidays. The honest answer is that this city spoils us for choice. Within a short drive you can go from a wide, empty beach to a shady forest to a garden lawn with a mountain behind it.

As a family photographer in Cape Town, we’ve learned that the best location is simply the one where your family relaxes. Below are our favourite family photoshoot locations around the city and the Peninsula, what each one is good for, and a few practical tips on light, wind and what to wear, so your shoot feels easy and your photos feel like you.

Choosing the right location for your family

Before choosing a famous view, think about who is coming:

  • Ages and energy. Toddlers love space to run. Grandparents may prefer flat paths, shade and a bench nearby.
  • What you love doing together. Beach families, forest families and picnic-on-the-lawn families all photograph beautifully in their own element.
  • Where you live or stay. A location close to home or your accommodation means less time in the car and happier children.
  • Season and wind. Some spots are sheltered, others are wonderfully wild. We’ll help you match the place to the forecast.

A happy family in a simple spot will always beat a tired family in front of a postcard view.

Beaches

Noordhoek Beach

Noordhoek’s long, wide stretch of sand, with Chapman’s Peak rising at one end, is one of our favourite places to photograph families. There is room for children to run, chase waves and dig.

Llandudno

This small cove on the Atlantic side is all granite boulders, white sand and spectacular sunsets. It suits smaller families and couples with a baby. Parking is limited, especially on summer evenings, so we plan to arrive early.

Camps Bay

With the Twelve Apostles behind you and the ocean in front, Camps Bay is the classic Cape Town backdrop, and a lovely choice for visitors who want their trip in the frame. It gets busy in peak season, so we usually suggest an early-morning session or a shoot outside the December rush.

Forests and green trails

Tokai Forest

On a windy day, a forest is a photographer’s best friend. Tokai’s tall trees give soft, dappled light and some shelter from the wind, and its paths are perfect for walking-and-chatting photos. For children, it feels like a little expedition.

Alphen Trail, Constantia

This gentle, leafy trail follows a stream through the Constantia greenbelts, with big old trees and plenty of shade. It’s mostly easy walking, so it works well with prams and grandparents, and in autumn the colours are gorgeous.

Gardens and parks

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

Set on the slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch has sweeping lawns, old trees and the mountain as a backdrop. It’s a beautiful, gentle choice for babies, grandparents and anyone who would rather not sit on sand. The garden has entry fees and its own rules for professional photography, so we’ll arrange the details with you beforehand.

Constantia wine farms

Vineyards, oak trees and mountain views make the Constantia valley a lovely setting, especially in late summer and autumn. Wine farms are private property, so we only shoot where we have permission.

Green Point Park

If you’re staying in the city, Sea Point or the V&A Waterfront area, Green Point Park is a relaxed option close by. Its flat paths and gardens are easy for little legs, prams and older relatives.

City views: Signal Hill

For sweeping views over the city, the harbour and the ocean, Signal Hill is hard to beat. It’s popular at sunset and exposed to the wind, so we keep these sessions short and sweet, which makes it ideal for a “we were here” family portrait during a holiday.

Golden hour and the best time of day

Wherever we go, timing matters as much as place. We love golden hour, the last hour or so before sunset, when the light turns soft and warm and everyone glows. In midsummer that can mean starting close to 7pm, and in midwinter closer to 4:45pm, so we’ll suggest a start time when you book.

With babies and toddlers, an early-morning session can be magic: soft light, quiet beaches and little ones at their happiest.

Cape Town wind and weather

Cape Town’s south-easter can blow hard in summer, and winter brings passing rain with beautiful light between showers. Autumn is often calm and golden. We always keep a sheltered backup spot in mind, such as a forest or leafy trail.

What to wear for a family photoshoot

  • Coordinate, don’t match. Choose two or three colours that sit well together: soft neutrals, earthy tones or gentle blues for the beach.
  • Skip big logos, neon and busy prints. They pull attention away from faces.
  • Choose clothes that move. Dresses that twirl and shirts that can be untucked look natural in motion.
  • Comfort first, especially for children. Comfortable kids are happy kids.
  • Layer up in winter. A warm jersey between shots keeps everyone smiling. On the beach, bare feet are perfect.

Family photos on a Cape Town holiday

A family photoshoot is a wonderful way to remember a trip. Tell us where you’re staying and we’ll suggest a beautiful spot nearby. The summer holidays book up quickly, so it’s worth getting in touch early.

Questions

Do we need a permit for family photos at Kirstenbosch or in Table Mountain National Park?

Some locations charge entry fees or require a permit for professional photography. We’ll confirm what’s needed for your chosen location when we book your session.

What is the best time of day for a family photoshoot in Cape Town?

The hour before sunset usually gives the softest, warmest light. Early mornings are a great alternative for young children and for quieter beaches.

What happens if it’s windy or raining?

We’ll check the forecast together a day or two before and move to a sheltered spot if needed.

Can you suggest a location close to where we’re staying?

Absolutely. Let us know your area when you enquire and we’ll recommend two or three nearby options.
